ECONOMY NEWS

  • A recent USDA analysis shows Kentucky has 67,170 family-owned farms that generated $7.8 billion in output, and these farms account for 96.8 percent of state operations — one of the highest shares nationally.  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky Fish and Wildlife raised the commercial fishing incentive to $.15 per pound — up from $.10 — for removing invasive carp at Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, noting that reduced carp populations help protect native fish habitats while supporting outdoor recreation and local tourism.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentuckians facing heating emergencies can apply for LIHEAP Crisis assistance today on a first-come, first-served basis at local Community Action Agency offices. The program runs statewide through Mar. 27 (or until funding is exhausted) and helps cover fuel costs for households meeting income guidelines.  WTVQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jan Hurst, 77, completed 410 Jazzercise classes at Jazzercise Frankfort in 2025, setting a studio record + she credited her daily workouts with keeping her active and connected to a supportive community.  The State Journal
  • During National Blood Donor Month, Kentucky Blood Center is urging donors to help replenish low blood supplies affecting more than 70 hospitals. Donors receive a hoodie as a thank you if they donate by Jan. 24 (centers include Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort, and more).  Kentucky Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frankfort High School named Dwight Sutton Jr. as head football coach on Monday, Jan. 5. Sutton brings a wealth of experience from Mercer County High School and collegiate programs (including Eastern Kentucky University and Lindsey Wilson College) and plans to strengthen both academics and athletics.  The State Journal
  • The Western Hills Wolverine basketball team beat Boone County 79-68 Friday at WHHS. Preston Clouse and Matt Dicken scored 23 points each, and Calen Higgins added 17 points with nine rebounds as the team shot over 50% from the field.  The State Journal
