COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Non-profit leaders discussed stricter SNAP rules that now bar candy and sugary drinks in Indiana, while Kentucky lawmakers consider similar measures. Let Us Learn will set up a booth twice monthly starting in February to help families access essential foods (bread, produce, eggs, and meat).  WKYT
  • Local fire officials warn that burning wet wood can cause creosote buildup — a fire risk that might spread to nearby structures. Franklin County Fire Department captain Chris Brown says using dry wood and scheduling professional chimney inspections can help protect homes.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Capital City Museum in downtown Frankfort has hired two cats — Hazel, a 6-year-old female tabby, and Moose, a 4-year-old male with tabby markings — as temporary supervisors who boost staff morale during museum hours and are available for adoption until they find forever homes.  LEX 18
  • Local artist Christina Lynch will host an art gallery open house Friday, Jan. 9, from 5-7 p.m. at Yes Arts at 317 W. Second St to showcase her work inspired by historical printmaking and Eastern European art traditions.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Frankfort Plant Board built a one-megawatt solar panel array on a former landfill site (used for construction fill) near its Flynn Avenue headquarters on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Funded partly by USDA Rural Energy for America Program, the project now offers community solar access and lowers carbon emissions.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear announced a statewide carbon monoxide safety initiative last year that prioritized proactive inspections of aging schools, daycares, and senior living facilities. Public officials said the checks ensured that heating and ventilation systems met safety standards during winter months.  92.7 The Wave

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC data show that more than 20 states are now recording the highest flu activity — including Kentucky, where a new strain has spurred an early surge due to low vaccination rates. Health officials advise residents to get vaccinated immediately to help curb the spread.  WKYT

  • Franklin County’s girls basketball team won its 57-52 district opener over Great Crossing Tuesday at FCHS with Makiyia Wheeler scoring 15 points (others added double-digit scores). The Lady Flyers play Mercer County today and host Western Hills Friday.  The State Journal
