COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recent report on Frankfort’s urban renewal history shows how public housing projects like Sutterlin Terrace and Riverview Terrace challenged racial barriers in redevelopment. The report also details local educational facility improvements near Kentucky State University and longstanding contributions from architects Oberwarth & Livingston to the city’s community development.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Canadian comedian Ahren Belisle will perform at Comedy Off Broadway in Frankfort on Saturday night, rock singer John Waite headlines at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset at 6 p.m., and a transportation exhibit opens at 11 a.m. at the Kentucky Historical Society.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frankfort students were named to the University of the Cumberlands President’s List for fall 2025 after meeting strict academic standards (a 4.0 GPA, at least 12 credit hours, and an A in UC Engage), as announced on Friday, Jan. 9.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort residents Deloris Boateng and Baylor Brooker were named to the Lindsey Wilson University Dean’s List for the fall semester; the honor recognizes full-time students earning a GPA of 3.50 or higher + reflecting their academic excellence.  The State Journal
  • Four Frankfort students were named to the Fall 2025 President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University — a recognition for maintaining a 3.700 GPA during the term from September to December, including Whitney Simpson, Frankie Toath, Mikaela Webb, and Jay Patel.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Matt Nunn (bill sponsor) introduced Senate Bill 101 to strengthen protections for teachers and staff by lowering the charging age to 14 and imposing a mandatory 12-month expulsion for injurious actions. The measure will take effect later this year if approved.  WTVQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wildlife officials confirmed a new Chronic Wasting Disease case today in a wild deer from Ballard County, marking the second case in the county and third confirmed statewide (no changes are planned to the CWD Surveillance Zone).  Kentucky Today
  • Gov. Beshear's proposed budget fully funds Medicaid and adds $100 million to lower kynect coverage costs — state officials reported more than 85,000 inbound calls and 1,600 outreach events since Nov. 1. Kentuckians have until Jan. 15 to enroll for 2026 coverage.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Western Hills’ girls basketball team won 75-53 on Tuesday at WHHS to improve to 11-3 and extend its five-game winning streak — they honored former champions at halftime and will face Franklin County Friday.  The State Journal
