CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ FrankfortCon brings pop culture fans together by hosting a full-day convention with cosplay contests, gaming tournaments, and celebrity appearances. It runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Capital Plaza Hotel (405 Wilkinson Blvd), with tickets available online and at the door for $20. The State Journal
- ➤ FRANK magazine skipped its February issue due to technical difficulties and credited subscribers with an extra month; publication will resume with the March issue expected in the mail around Feb. 15. The State Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frankfort Independent Schools renewed superintendent Dr. Sheri Satterly's contract until June 30 (2030) following a unanimous board vote Monday; she began in July 2022 and has strengthened district finances by securing nearly $2 million in grants. The State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Louisville native Meg Fister has been hired to lead the revamped Kentucky Film Office (she brings nearly 20 years of film and TV experience) and will boost local production; Gov. Andy Beshear said her appointment aims to attract more industry investment and strengthen creative work in our communities. Louisville Public Media
- ➤ Franklin County planners and the Kentucky Geological Survey inspected landslide areas at Big Eddy Road (last Wednesday, Jan. 14) after historic flooding last April affected over 500 homes. Officials are considering grants for bank stabilization and have offered a voluntary buyout program to 36 properties for future safety. LEX 18
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The American Cancer Society report shows a 70% five-year survival rate for all cancers among those diagnosed from 2015 to 2021, with improved outcomes for advanced cases (35% survival) thanks to reduced smoking. The report also estimates 31,440 new Kentucky cancer cases this year. LEX 18
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Frankfort’s boys basketball team lost 57-50 in overtime Tuesday to Lexington Christian at LCA - they will play Western Hills Friday with Rajon Floyd scoring 18 points. The State Journal
- ➤ The Kentucky Wildcats won against LSU 75 to 74 after freshman center Malachi Moreno made a buzzer beater with an assist from Collin Chandler; the team will face the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville on Saturday, Jan. 17. WKYT
- ➤ Western Hills’ girls basketball team evened its district record at 1-1 with a 60-56 win over Great Crossing Tuesday. Bry’e Wolfe led with 22 points, and the team will play at Dunbar Thursday and host Frankfort Friday. The State Journal
