CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday at 3 p.m., the Grand Theater will show the documentary ‘Stories from the Balcony’ again following a 2 p.m. open house. The venue will close on Jan. 19 for renovations, and the event is free and open to the public.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Kentucky partnered with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Cooperative Extension Service to launch a $22 forage testing program for local farmers to assess hay and feed nutritional content. Testing began in November and extension agents and producers now receive vital results.  LEX 18
  • Rep. Nancy Tate (R-Brandenburg) has filed HB 359 to add human growth and development lessons for grade six students using ultrasound video and computer animation; parents can opt their children out. This is the third time she has introduced the bill, previously known as the Baby Olivia Act.  Kentucky Today
  • Construction for the new Elkhorn Elementary School is underway off Steadmantown Lane on Lion Way + it is set to open in August 2027.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Barren River Lake State Resort Park will receive a $9.5 million upgrade to improve lodge rooms, the restaurant, and mechanical systems. The renovations will temporarily close the lodge beginning February and are set to complete in fall.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kentucky Department for Public Health confirmed a Jessamine County resident tested positive for measles, marking the first case since July 2025 — the person was exposed when an out-of-state traveler visited Fayette County between Dec. 31, 2025 and Jan. 2. Health officials are contacting exposed individuals and urging vaccination.  LEX 18
  • The FDA and CDC are investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to Live it Up-brand Super Greens dietary supplement powder, with four cases confirmed in Kentucky from late 2025. Superfoods, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall on Jan. 14 for products expiring between 08/2026 and 01/2028, urging consumers and retailers to discard them.  Kentucky Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Western Hills’ girls swim team placed third at the Boyle County meet held Jan. 8 at Centre College, and WHHS’ Layla Robinson won the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 5.34 seconds. Their results show strong local competition in the swim scene.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County’s boys basketball team beat Harrison County 81-43 on Tuesday at FCHS, with five players scoring in double figures including Kaevin Russell and Porter Peale. The Flyers will play Dunbar at home today.  The State Journal
