EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Kentucky Auditor’s office announced a contest for students 13 and under to create a bookmark-sized drawing celebrating reading for Read Across America Day on March 2; entries must be original and are accepted until Feb. 19 (via email or the auditor’s website). Kentucky Today
- ➤ Kentucky State University had its accreditation continued with Probation for Good Cause at the December SACSCOC meeting — the board noted strong financial, enrollment, and program improvements, and the university will face a final audit in October to verify its last remaining standard. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kentucky American Water reminds Frankfort residents to protect pipes by shutting off water, disconnecting hoses, and insulating vulnerable pipes as below-freezing temperatures approach. Customers are advised to open cabinet doors and let a small trickle of water run (to avoid costly repairs) during these cold days. WTVQ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Kentucky Blood Center updated eligibility so patients completing treatment for some cancers can donate blood one year later (organ cancers and melanoma) while those with blood cancers remain permanently ineligible. The change is now in effect at centers including Frankfort. The State Journal
- ➤ nuEra Frankfort will open Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at 325 Leonardwood Drive — the new 4,000 sqft dispensary offers lab-tested cannabis products and private consultations for qualifying patients while adding 15 jobs. The State Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Franklin County’s boys basketball team lost 79-53 to Taylor County on Tuesday, with Aaron Jones scoring 18 points while the Flyers (5-12) will play at Frankfort on Friday. The State Journal
- ➤ The Kentucky Wildcats earned their fourth straight win with an 85–80 score over Texas at Rupp Arena on Thursday, as Kam Williams broke his foot and others were sidelined. They will host Ole Miss Saturday at noon, with Collin Chandler scoring 18 points after missing practice (his best performance). WTVQ
