  • Today, the Catholic Action Center is opening an emergency warming shelter to help locals cope with an incoming winter storm. The center asks for donations to fund the shelter and support volunteer efforts.  WKYT

  • At Hearn Elementary’s Winter Wonderland on Friday, Jan. 23, first grader Jeremiah Russell served as a school resource officer by passing out candy and playfully handcuffing Principal Megan Barton, earning recognition as WesBanco Student of the Week.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Homeowners in Frankfort are advised to clear snow from outdoor units and check insulation as a winter storm will bring deep snow and freezing temperatures this weekend. Experts from local Greenbox Home Services say these simple steps can help prevent costly repairs.  LEX 18
  • Local emergency management in Kentucky has set road crews and forestry teams on standby for a weekend storm forecast to deliver up to a foot of snow + freezing rain that may impact roads and utilities; residents are urged to stock up on essentials.  Louisville Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frankfort Transit saw 22,633 more route riders last year and expects further increases as The Paddocks open. The agency will review evening and Sunday service and consider fare changes, as detailed at the Jan. 12 Board meeting.  The State Journal
  • Governor Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of a severe winter storm and activated the Emergency Operations Center to level 3 at 7 a.m. today. State resources including the National Guard are on call to manage dangerous travel conditions and prevent price gouging.  Louisville Public Media

  • Franklin County Fiscal Court approved a $33M industrial revenue bond for Franklin Devco LLC’s renovation of the downtown Capital Plaza Hotel at Tuesday’s meeting — the update will strip and redecorate guest rooms and meeting areas while potentially converting the seventh floor from condos back to hotel use.  The State Journal
