- ➤ Local hardware stores saw a surge in demand as severe winter weather drove buyers to purchase de-icers and propane tanks. Lyon's Hardware kept prices steady but sold out of winter essentials, while the attorney general warned that the price gouging hotline is active. LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ High school senior Holly Marshall was named WesBanco Student of the Week on Friday, Jan. 30 after excelling in academics, music, and sports (she is a co-president of her class and leads both the Drama and Beta Clubs). She plans to attend the University of Kentucky. The State Journal
- ➤ Franklin County Schools dealt with heavy weather that forced a full week of cancellations, and the board set March 23 (makeup for Friday’s lost day) as a school day. A special meeting approved a new teacher apprenticeship program and weight room coordinator roles for high schools to grow local talent. The State Journal
- ➤ Frankfort Independent Schools Board approved the draft budget for fiscal year 2027 Monday in a virtual meeting, as CFO Logan Rupard presented fund allocations and a contingency fund (15% of the budget). A tentative budget must be approved by May 30 with final submission due in September. The State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A petition filed this morning accuses Fayette County Public Schools Board Chair Tyler Murphy of breaching public trust through inappropriate acts that could disqualify him from office (petition submitted by Rep. Matt Lockett) and follows a call for his resignation from lawmakers last September (earlier demands were made). WKYT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ NuEra Cannabis opened Friday at 11 a.m. on Leonard Wood Dr. in Frankfort as the first medical cannabis dispensary in the city. Patients must show state-issued ID to buy products (with vapes and gummies expected in the coming weeks) while supply is limited as stock grows. LEX 18
- ➤ Local health officials say the varicella vaccine prevents chicken pox, a contagious disease with an itchy rash that spreads before symptoms appear. They recommend vaccination for children (12–15 months and again at 4–6 years) and advise at-risk groups to update their shots to keep the community safe. Kentucky Today
