COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kentucky survivor Dongayla Dobson founded nonprofit Sexual Assault Safe Space in September 2025 to help survivors by sending care packages — and she plans to open a 15-bed treatment center within five years with a goal of $150,000 in funding.  LEX 18

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The winter storm death toll in the state climbed to 22 after six additional fatalities were confirmed Thursday while officials report that power outages have reached normal levels & boil water advisories remain for over 12,000 customers.  WKYT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Franklin County saw its unemployment rate drop from 4.5% in December 2024 to 3.9% in November 2025, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics within the Education and Labor Cabinet.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kentucky Senate will host Military Kids Day on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the state Capitol campus, where military families will explore the building and enjoy educational activities. Capacity is capped at 150, so parents should register early (email Senate Clerk Donna Holiday for details).  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After last January's storm claimed 22 lives statewide, officials say a new winter system is forecast today, with the National Weather Service issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for areas south and east of a line from Milton to Pikeville (including Frankfort) where up to two inches of snow are expected.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate approved Senate Bill 5 on Thursday allowing local schools in USDA Child Nutrition Programs to purchase Kentucky-grown produce, supporting local farmers and student nutrition (the measure passed 38-0) and now moves to the House.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tammy’s Diner at 3624 Georgetown Road is inviting customers to wear red today for National Wear Red Day and to support American Heart Month, with a free red velvet cake for those who participate.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Franklin County’s boys basketball team lost home games Monday (55-46) and Wednesday (65-52) against Spencer County and Sayre. Aaron Jones scored 12 points in the first game while Kaevin Russell led the second with 12.  The State Journal
