COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ion Center for Violence Prevention will join today's Shop & Share by collecting supplies at Kroger stores and the Newport Car Barn, where volunteers will sort donations to stock their shelters for the year.  LINK nky
  • Bill Cull will host an open house for the restored old firehouse at 307-309 W. Main St. on March 5 at 4 p.m., where visitors can tour three newly created apartments (Train Car, Eyeglass, and The Loft) and a live/work space.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Popular Tashi Kyil Tibetan Buddhist monks return to the Paul Sawyier Public Library’s River Room on Monday to build a Medicine Buddha sand mandala over five days, closing Friday at noon (the sand is then poured into the Kentucky River). They will also host a cooking class on Saturday.  The State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Unemployment rates fell in all 120 counties from December 2024 to December 2025, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics; Woodford County had the lowest rate at 2.7 while Shelby, Caldwell, Fayette, Oldham and Todd counties recorded rates between 2.8 and 2.9, and several counties logged 3%.  92.7 The Wave

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frankfort High crowned its basketball homecoming queen and king, Hadley Schoolfield and Carter Denton, on Thursday between the girls and boys games at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium *a longstanding tradition that highlights school pride*.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County junior Madi Suter took fifth place in Level 3 at last month’s Future Women of Welding competition in Louisville and was named WesBanco Student of the Week. Suter attends Franklin County Career and Technical Center and said the event helped her build skill under timed conditions.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dovie Kirkland is urging lawmakers to adopt a new Wynter Alert system to quickly notify the public when Amber Alert criteria do not apply, as many at-risk children miss urgent help. Her proposal (inspired by Wynter Wagoner’s case) also calls for updated education on online grooming and predators.  LEX 18

SPORTS NEWS

  • Western Hills’ girls basketball team closed district play on Thursday with an 84-28 win over Frankfort at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium; they finished 4-2 and will face Mason County on Saturday while Frankfort plays at Williamsburg.  The State Journal
  • Western Hills’ girls basketball team completed its sweep of Great Crossing on Wednesday by beating the Warhawks 58-51 at WHHS. The Lady Wolverines, led by Malia Campbell’s 14 points, Sakota Wilder’s 12 and Aubrey Perkins’ 10, will host Anderson County Tuesday.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County’s Caleb Daniels and Lillie Pollard qualify for the state bowling tournament next week at Kingpin Lanes in Louisville—Daniels placed fourth and Pollard placed third in regional events, setting them up for boys and girls singles on Monday and Tuesday.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort boys basketball beat Western Hills 82-77 in overtime on Thursday at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium as the Panthers' extra practice on finishing games paid off. Coach Derek Robinson said the team will play at Great Crossing Monday and at Franklin County on Feb. 13.  The State Journal
