COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ethan Branscum and his mother launched a pet pantry in October to deliver pet food to unhoused residents in Frankfort, serving at ACCESS and the Simon House. They accept donations at home and at Wild Birds Unlimited (1100 U.S. 127 South) to support local pet owners in need.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort started a yearlong six-part civic engagement program on Tuesday that features units like Frankfort Rocks and a new local music video. The program offers interactive tests and public activities while an Independence Day celebration on July 3 will include music at Riverview Park.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kentucky Farm Bureau scholarship program is accepting applications from high school seniors whose parent is a member until 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28; the program offers scholarships in over 50 categories to cover tuition, housing, books and other education expenses.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Columbia Gas is accepting applications for the 2026 Environmental Action Grant (grants range from $500 to $5,000) that supports local environmental projects in Central and Eastern Kentucky. Eligible non-profits must submit project details by April 3, with winners announced the week of Earth Day (April 20 week).  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Budget Director John Hicks reported on Tuesday that January’s General Fund receipts fell 3.7% to $1,358.5 million compared to last January. Lower business tax revenues — down $108.0 million — led the drop while gains in sales, use, and property taxes partly offset the loss.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis recommended that the General Assembly add 16 conditions including Parkinson’s disease and ALS to help about 430,000 patients find relief. A new dispensary opened in Florence on Feb. 7 and gummies are now available as supply expands.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Franklin County’s Caleb Daniels and Lillie Pollard earned top-four finishes at the Region 7 bowling tournament last week — securing their spots in the state meet at Kingpin Lanes in Louisville. They were named Traditional Bank Athletes of the Week.  The State Journal
  • Isaiah Jackson, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound player from Rockcastle County, will join the University of Kentucky football team as a walk-on and hopes to start as a freshman. He flipped from Louisville to UK after meeting coach Will Stein + plans to prove his skills on the field.  The State Journal
