CULTURE NEWS

  • Bourbon Tango is hosting a free dance open house on Friday, Feb. 27 at Kentucky Dance Academy on Wapping St (5:30-8 p.m.) where participants can try swing, salsa and tango with no experience or partner needed. A four-week dance series will start on March 6.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear and the Kentucky State Police are accepting online applications for the free Youth Academy Program for teens (16 and 17 years old) running June 28 through July 2 at Trooper Island Camp on Dale Hollow Lake. Applications must be submitted by May 14.  The State Journal
  • Russell Circuit Clerk Tony Kerr supports Donate Life Kentucky Trust by promoting two education initiatives: a $20,000 student scholarship program accepting applications until April 6 (the deadline) and a short film for high school classrooms to spark conversation about organ donation.  92.7 The Wave
  • On Thursday, the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled in Frankfort that charter school legislation is unconstitutional because state funds must support only common schools. The ruling reaffirms past court decisions and repeated voter rejections of charter proposals.  Kentucky Today
  • The Kentucky House passed two education bills Tuesday, Feb. 17 that will reshape public schools and public colleges. One bill, backed by the Kentucky Department of Education, will focus on individual student progress while the other permits dismissals for financial reasons, a move opposed by university union workers as both bills head to the Senate.  LINK nky
  • Lawmakers filed House Bill 1 to let the state join a federal education scholarship tax credit program that offers tax benefits to donors supporting local scholarship organizations. The legislation would require yearly approval by the General Assembly and give the Secretary of State responsibility for managing the program (including publishing regulations and collecting fees).  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House Committee on Health Services passed Bill 510, which sets a mandatory pause in organ donation if safety concerns arise, and it will move to the full House for further debate while the cabinet must establish guidelines by Oct. 1 each year starting 2026.  WKYT
