ECONOMY NEWS

  • A state report found that Kentucky utilities disconnected over 268,000 customers during fiscal 2025, an 87% increase mainly by LG&E and KU, as LIHEAP benefits ($33M) fell short of offsetting over $68M in unpaid bills + prompted calls for more support.  LINK nky

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation reinstated Lifetouch as its preferred school photography vendor after a comprehensive review found current operations meet safety and privacy standards — school districts can still choose alternative vendors while KEDC continues monitoring partnerships.  WTVQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frankfort Regional Medical Center hosted Healthcare Day for Leadership Frankfort where local leaders learned about robotic joint replacement, practiced CPR and fire safety with the Fire and EMS team, plus met with county officials to discuss future community health improvements.  The State Journal
  • A new state report shows that child overdoses and abuse cases involving dangerous substances increased sharply in fiscal year 2024. Officials urge clearer product warnings and better caregiver education (safe storage practices) to help prevent these fatal and near-fatal incidents.  LINK nky

SPORTS NEWS

  • Highlands softball team tops the preseason 9th Region poll — seven local coaches voted them first ahead of Conner, Cooper and Ryle — and the KHSAA season will begin on March 16.  LINK nky
  • Local wrestlers from Franklin County and Western Hills have qualified for state championships this weekend as boys will compete Thursday and Friday at Alltech Arena at Kentucky Horse Park and girls will wrestle Saturday following strong regional wins — showcasing local talent.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort’s girls basketball team defeated TFCA 49-17 Monday at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium in the first round of the 41st District tournament and will face top-seeded Franklin County in the semifinals Tuesday.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County junior Cathlynn Smith became the first female region champion at Franklin County High School by winning the Region 2 152-pound wrestling championship on Tuesday, Feb. 24 — earning Traditional Bank Athlete of the Week honors while improving her 9-1 record after returning from an injury.  The State Journal
