COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The South Frankfort Neighborhood Association will hold its quarterly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 2 at the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church (corner of Steele and West Third streets), and the meeting is open to the public.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort Elks Lodge #530 donated $4,000 to the Capital City Activity Center in January + René True presented the check to executive director Marchele Jenkins.  The State Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Tanner Smelcer, 25, pleaded guilty to poaching charges in Martin County after investigators linked his illegal taking of four deer and one elk to digital evidence gathered since January 2025; he was fined $5,000, ordered to pay $4,804.27 in restitution, and his hunting privileges were suspended for three years.  Kentucky Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayette County Public Schools board chair Tyler Murphy’s counsel asked for dismissal of a removal petition filed in Frankfort by Rep. Matt Lockett alleging breaches of public trust. The counsel argued that only the Attorney General may remove a board member and that the petition would undermine voters’ will.  WKYT
  • Students and advocates met Thursday at the Capitol to urge lawmakers to pass House Bill 95, which would provide free menstrual products in public schools from grade 6 to 12 (a measure designed to reduce period poverty and support student health).  WKYT
  • Kentucky lawmakers are considering House Bill 1 to opt the state into a federal education tax credit program that grants up to $1,700 in credits for donor-supported K-12 scholarships. Some say it may benefit public schools, while others worry it could shift funds away from them.  LEX 18

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Bill 593 was approved by the House Economic Development and Workforce Investment Committee on Thursday (Rep. Josh Bray introduced the measure) to require tech companies bringing data centers to cover utility, water, gas, and wastewater costs without subsidizing ratepayers.  Kentucky Today
  • Gov. Beshear approved 12 projects on Feb. 26 for $13.5 million in state funding to upgrade sites and build readiness for future job growth across local counties including Adair. The investment supports economic development and primes communities for private-sector interest + new industry projects.  92.7 The Wave
  • The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has launched a Friends of Agriculture license plate that supports 4-H, FFA and other agricultural programs with a $10 fee. Plates are available at county clerk offices + through the Transportation Cabinet.  WTVQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Franklin County’s boys basketball team won 65+47 against Frankfort on Wednesday at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium to move into Friday’s championship game against Great Crossing; a victory will send them to the 11th Region tournament for the first time since 2021.  The State Journal
  • Western Hills girls basketball team beat Great Crossing 54-53 in the district semifinal at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 26, earning a spot in the championship and will face Franklin County today. The win ends Great Crossing’s six-year run to the regional tournament.  The State Journal
