  • Mary Nishimuta launched a GoFundMe page to help Buddy’s Pizza cover payroll and operating costs after owner Mike Hedden passed away on Feb. 21; neighbors rallied and donated over $16,000 to support the local business + family during this difficult transition.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at 4 p.m., the Hopewell Museum will screen a documentary honoring Bourbon County’s Paris 3, a group of three local women whose stand against segregation 65 years ago sparked change; tomorrow, a proclamation reading at the Bourbon County Courtroom and a walk to the bus station diner will further recognize their impact.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frankfort Independent Schools (FIS) board approved Monday an amended calendar after inclement weather caused low attendance. The update makes March 23 and 24 staff learning days, moves PEP to March 25 through 27, sets EXCEL from March 30 through April 3, and schedules spring break for April 6 through 10.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort brothers Bobby and Billy Stone honored their great-great grandfather’s legacy by sharing his journey to earn one of the state’s first teaching certificates during a presentation last week at the Capital City Activity Center (Meals on Wheels Greater Frankfort).  The State Journal
  • Western Hills senior Zeek Robinson, who holds a 4.0 GPA and takes dual credit and AP courses, has been named WesBanco Student of the Week after his acceptance at the University of Chicago (an institution with an acceptance rate under 5%). He plans to pursue pre-law studies and remains active in school clubs and community service.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent climate data shows that the 30-year averages for spring temperatures and rainfall at Blue Grass Airport are at record highs since 1873, signaling a greater risk of severe storms as March nears (a trend noted by a local climate expert). Kentucky’s Severe Weather Awareness Week will begin next week with a statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday morning.  WKYT

  • Starting Sunday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will impose alternating overnight lane closures on I-64 East from mile marker 53 (near U.S. 127) to 58 (near U.S. 60) between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. while resurfacing and repairing bridges; work is expected to finish by Fall.  The State Journal
