- ➤ The Kentucky Women’s History Alliance will mark Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day with a celebration at the River Room of Paul Sawyier Public Library on Saturday, Mar. 7 from 1-3 p.m. Attendees can enjoy refreshments+displays and share family recipes during this social gathering. - ➤ Paris, Kentucky marked an important moment on Mar. 1, 2026 as the city honored three Black teenagers jailed 65 years ago for seeking service at a local diner — the ceremony in the original courtroom spurred calls for healing and dialogue. LEX 18
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Liberty Hall and KSU Extension will host a Backyard Naturalist series starting Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at Liberty Hall, where attendees will join an indoor talk and outdoor bird walk about woodpeckers and nesting boxes. The State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kentucky Public Service Commission approved a 5.87% rate increase for Kentucky Power, raising average monthly bills by $10.76 from $183.37 to $194.13 and launching a two-tier rate structure for high-usage customers (with lower rates after 600 kWh). The commission also ordered an independent management audit. Kentucky Today
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ In March, Capital City Activity Center/Meals on Wheels Greater Frankfort (CCAC) will join Administration for Community Living (ACL) and local providers in celebrating the Senior Nutrition Program's anniversary. During Champions week (March 16-20), CCAC will deliver meals and host lunches to support seniors with healthy eating and social connections. The State Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Eastern Kentucky University is hosting the 11th Region basketball tournaments this week. The girls tournament begins today with games at 7:15 p.m. Monday and 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, while the boys tournament starts on Wednesday (championships on March 8 and March 9). The State Journal
- ➤ Franklin County girls won a 41st District championship matchup 44-43 over Western Hills at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium (the game was held Friday), while the boys fell 56-43 to Great Crossing. The State Journal
- ➤ Franklin County junior Cathlynn Smith placed third in the 152-pound weight class at the KHSAA Girls’ Wrestling State Championships held Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park. She pinned four opponents and improved on her seventh-place finish last year. The State Journal
- ➤ No. 16 Kentucky Wildcats lost at home to No. 3 South Carolina Gamecocks 60-56 in a close contest today. The Wildcats now await their SEC Tournament seed as Clara Strack led with 24 points during the game. WTVQ
