EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The USDA has awarded Kentucky State University a $1.7 million grant to expand hands on learning, improve food safety and boost job ready skills in modern agriculture. The university will lead four projects integrating specialty crops, summer programs and research training for students and producers. The State Journal
- ➤ House Bill 67 was advanced by the House Primary and Secondary Education Committee on Wednesday after receiving unanimous committee approval. Sponsored by Rep. J.T. Payne, the bill clarifies school communications by expanding exemptions for group texts and emergency responses (exemptions include non-traceable texts among school staff and volunteers). - ➤ FCPS began investigating allegations that a teacher used highly inappropriate language in class on Mar. 4. Officials have not yet released further details (more updates are expected). WKYT
- ➤ Local JROTC instructors received guidance urging them to decide if cadets should wear uniforms in public due to safety concerns over the Iran conflict + Franklin County High School will keep cadets in uniform on Wednesdays and at designated events. WKYT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The PSC approved a rate increase for Kentucky Power on Saturday, raising rates 5.87% in the first year and 6.63% in 2027, which drew criticism from residents struggling with high bills (some reports show bills over $1,000). Senate Bill 8 to expand the commission is set to be introduced Monday. WKYT
- ➤ Frankfort lawmakers are considering Senate Joint Resolution 116, which directs local universities to work with community partners to address physician shortages & expand health care access in underserved areas. The measure passed the Senate Health Services Committee on Wednesday and now heads to the Senate floor. Kentucky Today

- ➤ The 41st District girls basketball all-tournament team was named after Franklin County edged Western Hills 44-43 in the championship game last Friday — La’Kyiah Taylor earned tournament MVP. The State Journal
- ➤ Franklin County’s girls basketball team beat Berea 61-30 Tuesday at Eastern Kentucky University (the team built a strong lead by halftime) to reach the 11th Region tournament semifinals. They will face Dunbar Friday at 8:15 p.m. The State Journal
