GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate passed a bill cutting worker safety rules to the federal minimum with 28 votes to 9—if the House agrees, Gov. Beshear will soon decide its fate. The measure would remove over 16 state protections, including the rule that required fall safety measures for workers at heights of 10 feet and above.  Louisville Public Media
  • Lawmakers in Frankfort are rushing to pass bills on education, driver’s licenses, and artificial intelligence as the session nears its end on March 27. Both chambers met on Thursday and will hold a veto session Friday — many measures now face the governor’s review.  WKYT
  • Trooper Parker, a six-year member of the Kentucky State Police, launched Scoop with a Trooper to help local children feel safe with law enforcement. The state police honor a history of inclusion and reach out to high school students to encourage future careers in policing — a promise to serve everyone fairly.  LEX 18
  • Attorney General Russell Coleman and PSC Chair Angie Hatton filed a complaint with FERC against American Electric Power—accusing Kentucky Power of having its customers fund utility transmission projects in seven states. The filing notes that local customers pay the highest rates and have subsidized about $66 million in out-of-state investments between 2017 and 2022.  Kentucky Today
  • Attorney General Russell Coleman and PSC Chair Angie Hatton filed a complaint against Kentucky Power for forcing customers to pay for utility projects in other states—claiming that from 2017 to 2022, locals subsidized about $66 million in transmission investments while facing high rates. The complaint seeks to hold the company accountable for its actions impacting Kentuckians and to address affordability concerns.  WKYT
  • The House passed a bill that now includes exceptions to the near total abortion ban after the Senate added language to clarify the difference between elective procedures and medically necessary care—this measure now heads to the governor’s desk. The House also approved a minor change to HB 4, which bans Diversity, Equality and Inclusion programs in postsecondary education.  Kentucky Today
