ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stayed at 5.3 percent in January 2025—unchanged from December but 0.6 points higher than last year as the labor force grew by 3,931 people. More jobs were added by 4,144 while unemployment dropped by 213, even as nonfarm employment fell by 4,900 jobs.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Kentucky House passed a bill that would lower the driving permit age from 16 to 15 and now it goes to Governor Andy Beshear—if approved, the bill will also extend permit validity and change license holding periods. This move could allow younger teens to start learning to drive sooner.  LINK nky
  • A Senate committee passed House Bill 520 after lawmakers changed the language so police can say that releasing records could pose a risk of harm. GOP Rep. Chris Fugate said the bill protects sensitive investigations — though critics worry it may let law enforcement and the attorney general hide records permanently.  Louisville Public Media
