  • Buffalo Trace Distillery will complete the last phase of its $1.2 billion expansion on July 1 by installing eight new 93,000 gallon fermenters to double its distilling capacity. The project employs 750 workers & new warehouses will be built every two months as the facility celebrates reaching its 9-millionth whiskey barrel.  LEX 18

  • Kentucky's longest-held death row inmate, Karu Gene White, lost another appeal after the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld his capital sentence for a 1979 triple homicide—Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the ruling.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paleontologists at Mammoth Cave National Park recently identified a new chipmunk shark species, Clavusodens mcginnisi (McGinnis’ nail tooth), in the Ste. Genevieve Formation rock layer; the tiny shark (measuring 3 to 4 inches) lived about 340 million years ago in a shallow sea that once covered Kentucky and is named after former park guide David McGinnis.  Louisville Public Media

  • Local leaders in Frankfort expressed frustration at a Kenton County Mayors Group meeting on March 15 over proposals that would take away local control of short-term rentals — the changes were attached to SB 61 — and warned that they could hurt housing affordability.  LINK nky
  • A settlement was reached in a federal civil rights lawsuit after a former Frankfort officer entered a woman's home without a warrant on July 7, 2023 — Kimberly Myers will receive $350,000 from Larry Guss Curtis and the City of Frankfort.  LEX 18
  • Kentucky lawmakers approved a Medicaid work requirement amendment on Friday night as part of efforts to cut federal spending on the program—since many working adults and local hospitals in rural areas rely on Medicaid. Experts warn the move may reduce access to care and increase financial strain in communities already dependent on the coverage.  LINK nky
  • Frankfort officials are planning the next fiscal year's budget to address a potential $24.5 million–$45 million deficit caused by COVID's long-lasting impact on the city's economy. Assistant city manager Andrew Hartley said the city will reform tax collections and review free and subsidized services to maintain quality local services.  WKYT
  • Kentucky State Police are inviting teens ages 16 to 17 to join the Youth Academy Program set for July 21 to 25 at Trooper Island Camp on Dale Hollow Lake with no cost to participants. The weeklong camp will let them build leadership skills and gain hands-on law enforcement experience—through forensics, teamwork and criminal investigation exercises—with applications due by June 10.  Kentucky Today
