Good morning, Frankfort. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear announced nearly $1.5 million in funds for six riverport projects to boost economic opportunities and improve local industry. The money—given through a 2024 grant program and managed by KYTC—will go to projects at five riverports to enhance offloading and storage.  Kentucky Today
  • Kentucky lawmakers passed House Bill 208 that requires every school board to adopt a cell phone policy in student conduct rules— it bans phone use during class unless there is an emergency or a teacher allows it. Boyd County Schools Superintendent Bill Boblett said limiting phone use may help students focus and the bill now moves to Gov. Andy Beshear for his decision.  WKYT
  • The Supreme Court of Kentucky reversed the manslaughter conviction of Troy Dunkelberger — an Ohio man convicted in May for the 2020 shooting death of Jarron Slayback on Lakeside Drive in Zoe. The court ruled that his actions of yelling a name and showing a holstered firearm did not justify using deadly force — and his conviction has been undone.  LEX 18
  • Gov. Andy Beshear vetoed House Bill 4, a measure that would bar public colleges from giving different benefits based on race, religion, or sex—he said the bill is about hate. The law passed both chambers and lawmakers can override the veto when they meet next week in Frankfort.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nestlé USA voluntarily recalled select Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s frozen meals after consumers reported a wood-like material in the products, including one potential choking incident. The affected meals were produced between August 2024 and March 2025 and sold at major retailers, and consumers are advised to return them for a refund or replacement.  Kentucky Today
