COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frankfort preservation officer Vicki Birenberg detailed plans to launch the Frankfort Historic Investment Program later this year to fund local historic property renovations, along with updated zoning guidelines that support preservation (including efforts from the African American Historic Context Report).  The State Journal
  • Dr. Jessica Kress will host the Commonwealth Smiles Free Community Egg Hunt for local families, offering a free activity to celebrate community spirit. The event will take place in Frankfort later this spring, and details on time and venue will be announced soon.  WKYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new report (the 31st in an in-depth series) details historic Black neighborhoods in Frankfort, including Pawpaw Chute and Green Hill, where most homes were demolished in the 1950s for larger white residences and green space near the Governor's Mansion. The study documents long-forgotten landmarks and cultural heritage.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library say the proposed state budget will cut matching funds from full to one-third (forcing 80% of programs to reduce or close by May) and may end free book access for nearly 138,000 children statewide. They urge residents to call legislators to secure funding.  WKYT
  • Max Perry passed the TRACK exam and was named WesBanco Student of the Week, earning a year-two apprenticeship with AE Electrical Solutions. As a Franklin County electrician program senior, he will soon complete his OSHA 10 certification to be career ready in August.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear announced registration is open for the Safe Teen Driving Challenge for drivers aged 15 to 19; interested teens can sign up until Apr. 16 and use the DriveWell Go (app) to track safe driving from Apr. 17 to Jul. 17 to win cash prizes, with winners recognized in August.  92.7 The Wave
  • The Kentucky House passed HB 904 on Thursday to set clear rules for charitable gaming and raise the betting age to 21 for sports and horse racing; the bill now heads to the Senate as non-profit leaders say the changes will help local organizations serve the community.  WKYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kentucky's WIC program is launching new food packages this month that let families choose more whole grains, infant fruits and vegetables, and canned fish, while reducing juice and cheese amounts (changes meet updated nutrition guidelines for varied needs).  WKYT
