EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A Western Hills student was honored at a ceremony on Saturday (at Rupp Arena in Lexington) as one of six ag athletes recognized by Commissioner Jonathan Shell at the KHSAA event. Award scholarships ranged from $1,000 to $2,000 to support higher education and agricultural careers. The State Journal
- ➤ Capital Day School held Character Night Thursday at the Frankfort High School auditorium, where grades 1-8 brought history to life by dressing as famous figures and presenting short speeches. Third-grader Maggie Hack, who portrayed Dolly Parton (wearing a family-made patchwork jacket), impressed her peers. The State Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kentucky’s spring turkey hunting season will start with a youth weekend (April 4-5) and then a 23-day general season (April 18-May 10) for hunters with proper permits; officials report improved turkey numbers and remind hunters to review all guidelines ahead of the season. 92.7 The Wave
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Monday’s Commissioners meeting, special event agreements were approved for regional celebrations including International Jazz Day on April 24 & Kentucky Derby Kickoff on April 25, allowing coordinated planning for downtown street closures and resource allocation during the event season from March through December. - ➤ Gov. Andy Beshear signed a bill on Monday+ creating a fund that will cover 50% of shelter costs up to $5,000+ with the program set to start in January while Pulaski County uses community shelters during tornado watches. WKYT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Humana Foundation & Face the Fight announced a $5 million grant this month to fund community-based mental health support for veterans in Kentucky and beyond; the program aims to help underserved veterans during their transition to civilian life by expanding access to care. LINK nky
- ➤ On Tuesday, Mar. 24, the DEA banned bromazolam after it contributed to nearly 50 deaths in Kentucky following a request by Attorney General Russell Coleman and a coalition of 21 states; the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy reported 48 overdose deaths in 2024 (designer Xanax is dangerous).
