- ➤ Peggy Dungan, a lifelong Frankfort resident, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday at Spring Arbor Senior Living (formerly Dominion) with family, friends, and local dignitaries including Governor Andy Beshear, Mayor Layne Wilkerson, Judge-Executive Michael Mueller, and Sheriff Dwayne Depp. The State Journal
- ➤ The state Capitol’s English Garden was in bloom on Tuesday as Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky held its annual pinwheel planting to mark Child Abuse Prevention Month. Gov. - ➤ Kentucky lawmakers delivered House Bill 253 to the governor today to end the three-cueing reading method in schools and add measures against teacher misconduct, giving over 19,000 educators time to receive new curriculum training through the 2029-2030 school year. WTVQ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Remove Invasives Partnership is hosting Bradford Pear Bounty Day on Saturday, April 18 (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at Liberty Hall Historic Site near Orlando Brown House as part of Earth Day festivities. Local residents who remove invasive Bradford pears can receive up to two free replacement native trees while supplies last. The State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Frankfort prohibits the dyeing and sale of baby chicks and rabbits (a rule meant to prevent harm and health risks) and fines violators up to $250. The ordinance, in effect since the 1880s and updated over time, will continue to protect animals and public health. The State Journal
- ➤ Lawmakers approved SB 185 to support Kentucky State University by setting a framework to stabilize finances and expand academic programs while preserving its historic role. The measure now awaits the governor’s review. Kentucky Today
- ➤ State highway safety officials launched the Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign that runs from April 6 to April 13 as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, reminding drivers to focus on the road. - ➤ Health officials advised Frankfort residents to use insect repellent + wear protective clothing as warmer weather brings more ticks carrying illnesses like RMSF and ehrlichiosis; they urged people to inspect and carefully remove ticks after outdoor activities. The State Journal
