COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frankfort residents marked the one-year anniversary of the Kentucky River flood on Paul Sawyier Drive, recalling the evacuation and rebuilding after the river rose from eight to nearly 50 feet. Local resident Katie Carney hosted a party (known as Mayor of Paul Sawyier) to highlight community recovery.  WKYT
  • Fifth-grader Molly Mangan, named WesBanco Student of the Week, completed her third annual toy drive on Collins Lane and collected 1,500 toys for Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s Treasure Box — she expanded the event by partnering with two other local schools and Sweet G’s ice cream.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lexington native Alexandrea Pangburn created the Governor’s Derby Celebration poster—titled 'The Governor’s Rose'—during a Team Kentucky update, and the large-scale mural inspired by her upbringing will be available for purchase later this month.  WKYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday marked the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 tornado outbreak that affected our area and killed 77 in Kentucky (31 in Meade County and 18 along Green Street in Brandenburg). The event left 120 homes and businesses damaged in Frankfort and nearby communities, showing how weather warning systems have improved.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, three local boards approved a $50,000 bid for the schematic design of an indoor pool and wellness center at a site on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Frankfort. Schmidt Associates from Louisville won the bid + officials say the six- to eight-month phase will guide next steps.  The State Journal
  • Lawmakers passed HB 2 on Apr. 3 & reduced Medicaid cuts after input from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Officials said the change is expected to improve state health coverage.  WKYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Franklin singer Christian Brown turned to music for strength when his newborn son, Isaiah, underwent surgery to fix a narrowed aorta - a procedure that involved removing the tight section and sewing the ends together. He later auditioned for American Idol and now shares that Isaiah is recovering at home with regular check-ups.  WKYT
