COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frankfort is cleaning up after the floods as local officials keep Easter traditions on track. The Franklin Sheriff’s Office and Fiscal Court will host Easter at Lakeview today at 1 p.m. + Gov. Beshear confirmed the Capitol event will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m., with pre-packed Easter bags, crafts, food and a visit from the Easter Bunny.  FOX 56
  • Franklin County Humane Society has been rescuing and sheltering animals displaced by floodwaters that forced owners to evacuate — the organization works with other groups to ensure the pets have a safe place until their owners return.   • Governor Beshear confirmed that flooding claimed seven lives, including a 9-year-old boy from Pendleton County who died last Friday while walking to his bus stop (the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund will cover funeral costs for all victims).  WTVQ

  • Today, Buffalo Trace Distillery resumed distribution as hundreds of workers cleaned its mud-filled buildings after the flood—master distiller Harlen Wheatley said bottling will resume tomorrow while the team inspects barrels and works on restoring the visitor experience.  WTVQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frankfort Independent Schools plans to bring students back to Second Street School on Monday, April 14—after officials confirmed the building is safe despite flood damage—by moving two lower-level classrooms until repairs are complete. The district will notify families if anything changes.  FOX 56
  • The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky has chosen 98 sophomores for its 20th incoming class—including local students from Frankfort among 47 counties statewide. The selected students will join a residential program at WKU where they will earn at least 60 college credits and an Associate Degree as they finish high school.  92.7 The Wave

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cleanup continues in Frankfort and Franklin County as road closures began on Friday to allow crews to remove debris, and Gov. Andy Beshear said FEMA aid applications for the county are still pending—residents with insurance are advised to contact their providers. Officials extended distribution center hours at the Old Pic-Pac building from Friday through Sunday to offer food, water and cleaning supplies while the solid waste department set up dumpsters for flood debris pickup.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kentucky recorded one confirmed measles case in Franklin County this year as the nation has seen more than double last year’s cases and outbreaks in states like Texas. Health officials in Woodford County urged families to vaccinate children promptly—pointing out only 90% of kindergarteners are protected against measles.  WKYT
  • Frankfort residents are warned by public health officials that floodwaters can mix with food and bring harmful bacteria and chemicals, so any food or packaging that touched floodwater should be thrown away. Officials advise cleaning kitchens thoroughly with a bleach solution to help prevent serious illness—following these steps will keep families safe.  Kentucky Today
