COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Candace Minnich and Taunya Jones join local organizer Nancy Green to host the Pancake Queen Spring Festival in Frankfort, which will feature pancakes, music, and family activities (details forthcoming).  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Franklin County Schools has named Geoff Cody as the next principal at Western Hills High School, effective July 1. Cody served as a history teacher, basketball coach + assistant principal and said he is eager to lead the school.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky State University’s Mighty Marching Thorobreds—the first HBCU band invited to perform at the Fiesta Bowl—will take the stage on January 2 in Arizona. They are raising $300,000 to cover their travel expenses.  WKYT
  • UK President Eli Capilouto said nearly all proposed cuts to the university's operating budget were restored during the legislative session, avoiding major reductions. The institution will also get about $30 million for asset care and has new legislation that lets the board plan a campus civic center.  WKYT
  • Peaks Mill’s fifth grader Harper King was named the 2025-2026 AAA Outstanding School Safety Patrol Officer and celebrated as WesBanco Student of the Week during a ceremony at Peaks Mill Elementary School (Friday, Apr. 17). She will lead the safety patrol team as chief officer this school year.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program will accept Spring Subsidy Cooling Component applications on Monday, Apr. 20, offering one-time electric assistance to eligible households & local residents can obtain further details from LIHEAP offices.  WKYT
  • Kentucky's Citizen Foster Care Review Board is asking for volunteers to review cases for about 9,000 children in state custody across 54 counties. Applicants must fill out an online form, pass a background check, and complete virtual training to serve on the board.  WKYT
