COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AJ Jolly Park is offering free admission all summer, even though its lake and campground are closed for renovations, and visitors can enjoy walking trails + sports fields while using available playgrounds, picnic areas and horse trails.  LINK nky
  • Frankfort’s Kings Center, at 202 E. Third St., celebrates 30 years of offering free afterschool programs that provide homework help, sports and enrichment activities for youth, running Monday-Friday from 3-6 p.m.  The State Journal
  • The rescheduled Bradford pear bounty event is set to take place at 1 p.m. today at the Farm Bureau Pavilion at Lakeview Park, alongside the Capital Area Master Gardeners Plant Sale (bring a photo of your felled pear to receive a native sapling, up to two per household).  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Franklin County senior Lily Clark earned the Capital City FFA Regional Star title in Agricultural Placement for her work at Canoe Kentucky and was named WesBanco Student of the Week on Friday. She plans to study pre-veterinary at Murray State University after graduation.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than half of the Commonwealth is under moderate drought as fire officials warn that dry, windy conditions heighten wildfire risks; in Madison County, crews fought a fire on Dreyfus Rd and managed controlled burns near Berea College to keep flames contained + residents are advised to follow burn restrictions.  LEX 18

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf announced that the Unclaimed Property Division has returned over $100 million to residents since he took office, setting a record for the state. He urged residents to check for unclaimed funds on the state treasury website.  Kentucky Today
  • Kentucky's Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission awarded over $30 million in grants to more than 100 organizations for drug prevention and recovery using funds from pharmaceutical settlements (supporting local programs for fathers and youth). Awards were made Friday at the Woodhill Community Center in Lexington.  WTVQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Lung Association released its 27th annual State of the Air Report, showing nearly half of U.S. children breathe unhealthy air (including 176,359 in Kentucky). The Lexington-Frankfort-Richmond area earned a B grade for ozone pollution, marking an improvement from last year.  Kentucky Today

  • The Legends won a thrilling home opener against the Dirty Birds yesterday in Frankfort + the close game showed strong skill and energy as the team began its season, leaving fans excited for more action ahead.  WKYT
