COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Church Women United of Franklin County will celebrate Friendship Day on May 15 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension at 311 Washington St with the program beginning at 11:30 a.m. featuring author Elly Gilbert, followed by lunch & two offerings.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Seven poets laureate gathered at the Paul Sawyier Public Library on April 24 to celebrate Kentucky Writers’ Day and later joined a ceremony at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort — honoring the state’s literary legacy.  The State Journal
  • During Saturday’s Downtown Frankfort Inc. Derby Celebration, locals waved at two Derby trains that passed at 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. as they headed to Churchill Downs for the 152nd Kentucky Derby — a cherished local tradition.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Frankfort High School drama club will present Gossamer as its final mainstage show, opening at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 with additional performances on Friday and Saturday evenings and a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m.—tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students.  The State Journal
  • Paul Sawyier Public Library is offering a week of free events for adults, tweens, and families starting Monday at 6 p.m. with an Alzheimer’s talk and continuing with career services, DIY workshops, and discussions until May 9 — some sessions require registration.  The State Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local gardening guide offers planting tips for May, advising residents to follow moon phases and zodiac signs when choosing between above-ground and below-ground plantings and to avoid work on danger days like Aries and Leo. The guide also warns of possible frost tonight, reminding gardeners to check the forecast.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Franklin County is hosting the Region 7 boys volleyball tournament Monday through Friday — matches begin Monday in both the main and auxiliary gyms and semifinals are held Wednesday. The championship match is set for 6 p.m. on Friday in the main gym.  The State Journal
