Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty pulled away on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs in front of more than 147,000 fans, earning owner Godolphin and trainer Junior Alvarado their first Derby win.
The horse also recorded its first Grade I stakes win — a historic milestone ahead of the upcoming Preakness on May 17.
Derby fans enjoyed the race day even though rain fell, keeping the festivities cheerful at local tracks across central Kentucky—organizers said the wet conditions did not slow the celebrations—and the long-standing Derby traditions went on as planned.
Many locals embraced the challenge, turning the damp weather into a reason to celebrate a cherished event.
