COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Capital Expo (a volunteer-run free event) returns from June 4–6 at Lakeview Park on the east side, featuring Idol finals, live music, a Classic Car Cruise-In, and a Children's Festival for all ages.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankfort High junior Jamie Bessinger is showcasing her first solo exhibit, 'Life,' at the credit union lobby on 100 Moore Drive until June 12 + a reception to honor her work is set for Friday, May 8 from 5 to 7 p.m.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear appointed Dr. Shambra Mulder, chair of the School of Psychology at Kentucky State University, to a four-year term on the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology after she was sworn in & attended her first board meeting on April 6.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky highway safety officials urge drivers and riders to look twice and share roads during Motorcycle and Bike Safety Awareness Month, with Gov. Andy Beshear stressing that extra caution can reduce crashes + injuries. Travelers are reminded to check blind spots to ensure safer journeys.  Kentucky Today
  • Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell signed a proclamation on Monday, May 4, declaring May as Kentucky Beef Month to honor local cattle farmers. Cattle producers attended the ceremony as a tight supply is driving higher market demand and sale prices for beef.  Kentucky Today
  • Gov. Andy Beshear signed an emergency order Tuesday to reduce the state gas tax by 10 cents per gallon, effective May 11 pending Attorney General Russell Coleman’s sign-off & freeze increases along with motor vehicle assessments for 2027, while asking Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for further savings.  LINK nky

SPORTS NEWS

  • Western Hills boys volleyball team lost to Dunbar by a 3 to 1 score on Monday, May 4 at the Region 7 tournament in Franklin County (the team finishes the season 13 to 6). Coach Mark Wallace said the loss shows a tough matchup against a well-prepared opponent.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort’s Braylen Wells was named Traditional Bank Athlete of the Week after winning long jump and triple jump events last week. The junior, who ranks No. 1 in triple jump plus No. 2 in long jump, will compete at the Class A Region 5 meet in Danville this Saturday.  The State Journal
