COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Juniper Hill Aquatic Center opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23. Daily admission and season passes remain the same for locals (children up to age two enter free), and water aerobics begin on Monday, June 1 with evening swims and a final closing on Labor Day, Sept. 7.  The State Journal
  • Kentuckians with insights into foster care can attend one of four 'Child Welfare in Action' forums hosted by the Citizen Foster Care Review Boards in June. Sessions will occur on June 4, 9, 11 and 15 from 11 a.m. to noon CDT with registration required for residents in designated counties.  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A U.S. Drought Monitor report issued Thursday showed Kentucky's extreme drought expanded to nearly 21 percent while no drought areas dropped to 2 percent amid little rain; NOAA reported rain in the west while central and eastern regions stayed dry and forecast above-normal temperatures with minor rain through May 27.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Andy Beshear ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff today at all state offices to honor fallen peace officers in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, following a White House proclamation and a joint resolution from 1962.  WTVQ
  • Gov. Beshear sent a letter to congressional leaders on Thursday during Team Kentucky urging passage of the Homegrown Fertilizer Act, which would lower fertilizer costs, reduce foreign reliance, and provide grants + low-interest loans for increased production and storage.  WKYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Blake Jones, a therapist in Midway, focuses on first responders’ mental health during Mental Health Awareness Month — he has completed 40 ride-alongs to support local professionals facing repeated traumatic events.  WKYT
