- ➤ Frankfort’s African American Historic Context Report shows a steel guard rail on Langford Avenue in the Cherokee and Langford Avenue neighborhood still forces residents to take a 1.5-mile detour to reach the public park—a barrier that continues to separate the Black community from adjacent white areas. - ➤ Collins Lane’s fifth-grader Jaylie Shryock was named WesBanco Student of the Week and Franklin County Schools’ Student Champion of the Month after shining in academics and school plays. FCS Superintendent Mark Kopp read her nomination at Monday’s board meeting + she stands out for her leadership and creativity. The State Journal
- ➤ A new national report found that Kentucky ranked as one of the best states for academic recovery in math and reading—placing eighth and fifth respectively among states—for third through eighth grade students. - ➤ Franklin County Schools approved a 2% pay raise for all staff for the 2026-2027 school year in a 4-1 vote at Monday’s meeting, while also honoring student board members and naming Teacher and Staff Members of the Year; the move aims to boost morale + retain competitive pay rankings. - ➤ Frankfort Independent Schools announced that Sarah Goodrich was named the new principal of Second Street School on Friday, May 15. The veteran educator formerly served at Maurice Bowling Middle School and brings extensive experience in culturally responsive teaching — a change aimed at boosting success for students and staff. - ➤ On Friday, May 15, the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved over $5 million to support agricultural diversification and rural development projects across several counties, with funds allocated for upgrades to veterinary services, market buildings, and equipment purchases. - ➤ K9 Charity, a DCI Labrador working in Frankfort, now has a bullet- and stab-resistant vest (donated by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.) after Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the upgrade Friday; the dog works with detective Shelby Guffey to spot hidden electronic storage during search warrants.
