COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local motorcycle club urges riders and drivers to exercise caution on the roads this Memorial Day weekend amid rising safety concerns — recent traffic incidents have prompted the warning.  WKYT
  • Juniper Hill Aquatic Center opens today at 11 a.m. and features water slides, a lap pool, and an activity pool, though the lazy river is closed for maintenance; admission is $10 for guests 11 and older and $8 for children (Franklin County residents receive a discount).  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Franklin County’s Samantha Morrell, a sophomore, ranked third statewide and eighth nationally on the French Level 2 exam this spring — earning her WesBanco Student of the Week honor as she plans to advance to French 3 and 4 later this year.  The State Journal
  • The Frankfort Independent Schools community mourned the loss of Kendall Cook, a 2025 Frankfort High School graduate whose passing deeply affected students and staff. Grief counselors will be available on site when classes resume Tuesday (immediate support is also accessible via email).  LEX 18

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear said Friday that more than $105 million in FEMA funds will reimburse six hospitals + KYEM for COVID-19 expenses incurred from January 2020 to May 11. The funds will support safety, patient care and essential supplies for local families.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Day weekend marks the start of summer, and the CDC urges parents to ensure close supervision and consider swimming lessons to prevent drowning in children—drowning is the leading cause of death for ages 1 to 4 and a major injury risk for older kids.  Kentucky Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • TFCA’s junior Abby Moore overcame last season’s torn hamstring to set a new personal record in the 200-meter dash at the state meet on Thursday at the University of Kentucky. She placed fourth while local athletes posted strong finishes in their events.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County's Lady Flyers won the 41st District championship on Thursday at Western Hills by taking a 5-4 lead with early runs + strong defense, earning their first title since 2014. The team and Great Crossing will advance to the 11th Region tournament at Eastern Kentucky University on Monday.  The State Journal
