CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Civil War Roundtable is set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 1 at the Paul Sawyier Library in the River Room+ Charles H. Bogart will present on the USS Rhode Island, detailing its service as a supply ship and gunboat during and after the Civil War. The State Journal
- ➤ Middle Springs Farm in Paris hosts its Memorial Day Poppy Festival today with thousands of red poppies and 13 crosses honoring fallen U.S. service members; due to weather delays, the farm will extend the festival into next weekend (visitors can view the blooms longer). LEX 18
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Three Franklin County residents joined the 29-member Leadership Central Kentucky Class of 2025-26 as they graduated on May 20 at R.J. Corman Railroad Group in Jessamine County. Applications for next year's program are accepted until June 8 for local workers or residents (including Franklin). The State Journal
- ➤ Franklin County Homemakers Association awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Western Hills High School graduate Maxwell (Max) Gleason at its annual meeting on Tuesday. Gleason will study architecture at Judson University and was praised by Homemakers member Betsy Kennedy for his school and community involvement. The State Journal
- ➤ Trinity Global Methodist Church will host a Vacation Bible School from June 22-24. Youth will enjoy crafts, snacks, and games from 6-8 p.m. each day at 265 Versailles Road while learning Bible stories featuring Jesus, Moses, Naomi, and Ruth. The State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kentucky Fish and Wildlife has urged boaters to avoid waterways this weekend due to rising water levels and forecasted rain (which may increase drowning risks); Game Warden James Brace said boaters should always wear approved life jackets and stay weather aware. WKYT
- ➤ Gov. Beshear ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until noon today — part of the Memorial Day observance that follows national flag protocol. Kentucky Today
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Governor Beshear announced (May 22) that Kentucky secured over $105 million in FEMA funds to reimburse six hospitals and Kentucky Emergency Management for COVID-19 costs, covering expenses from Jan. 2020 to May 11 and supporting ongoing hospital operations. LEX 18
