COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wilderness Road Event Center will open after delays caused by a deadly EF4 tornado that disrupted planning and construction — the facility is now set to host local events as it resumes operations.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Manas Garla, a Western Hills graduate, has been named one of 627 semifinalists in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program — one of the nation's highest academic honors. Final student selections will be announced by the U.S. Secretary of Education in the coming months.  The State Journal
  • The Kentucky Department of Education announced Tuesday its plan to run the Sun Meals program this summer, providing free meals for children in low-income areas. Over 2,000 sites will serve nutritious meals and offer educational and fun activities (locations and times vary).  Kentucky Today
  • The Kentucky Department of Education is addressing uncertainty over college admissions exams as Senate Bill 197 requires re-bidding the current SAT contract, leaving students unsure if they will use the ACT or SAT in the upcoming school year. A new contract may be finalized by October.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman James Comer's office will have a staff member and a veteran service officer available at the Veteran Resource Office at VFW Post 4075 (located at 104 E. Second St.) on Thursday, June 4 (10 a.m. to noon) to assist veterans.  The State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Linda Baxter, a Grayson County transplant recipient (organ donation advocate), will compete in the Transplant Games of America in Denver next month to honor the donor who saved her life while supporting a $20,000 donation to Second Chance at Life Team Kentucky.  LEX 18

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frankfort’s Indians, appearing in the 11th Region baseball tournament for the first time in 23 years, were defeated 2-0 by Madison Central at Legends Field on Monday; the season concluded with a 17-16 record.  The State Journal
  • The 11th Region softball tournament has been postponed by rain. The semifinals are rescheduled at George Rogers Clark today, with Great Crossing playing Madison Central at 6 p.m. and Franklin County facing Bryan Station at 8 p.m. (Championship on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.)  The State Journal
  • Franklin County’s track star Mariah Jackson returned to outdoor track after recovering from knee surgery and won the Class 2A state meet 100-meter hurdles Friday at 15.24 seconds, earning the Traditional Bank Athlete of the Week title; the college-bound graduate plans to study nursing.  The State Journal
