COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Muslim families celebrated the opening of a new Islamic Center at 160 Flynn Ave on May 19. The 8,500 sqft center hosted an open house with interfaith leaders and local officials who praised its role in fostering unity in our community.  The State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Franklin County saw its unemployment rate drop to 3.5% between April 2025 and April 2026, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics. Rates ranged from 3.1% in Woodford to 7.8% in Martin.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kentucky State University closed its main campus today after law enforcement advised immediate evacuation due to a potential threat to campus safety. Faculty, staff, and students have been told to leave while researchers at the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm continue work (official updates will follow).  LEX 18
  • Kentucky State University reported its Class of 2026 earned 428 degrees and credentials across summer 2025, fall 2025, and spring 2026, with students from 26 states and nine countries receiving over $10.1 million in grants and scholarships. The achievements mark significant growth compared to previous years.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said recent heavy rain improved drought conditions as nearly half the commonwealth stepped out of extreme drought, with some areas logging 5+ inches that eased severe and moderate levels. The improvement follows Thursday’s update from the drought system.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials held a ribbon cutting for the new driving range at 98 Buena Vista Drive on Wednesday; Fiscal Court Judge-Executive Michael Mueller and other dignitaries thanked collaborators + noted that vending machines will allow golfers to purchase balls when staff are absent.  The State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • SKS Copack is recalling several specialty drinks sold in Frankfort and other states due to potential Salmonella contamination. The company is working with the FDA to halt distribution and advises consumers to return items for a refund (no illnesses have been reported).  Kentucky Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • The City of Frankfort and Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites will cut the ribbon on Tuesday, Jun. 2 at 5 p.m. to open renovated pickleball, tennis and 1/2 basketball courts at East Frankfort Park (funded by a $250,000 grant).  The State Journal
