GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Russell Coleman said the Fayette County Public Schools Board broke state law by voting three to two for a 0.25% occupational tax increase on May 27 without giving proper public notice—KRS 160.603 requires a public hearing before new taxes are levied. Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe urged the Fiscal Court to pause further tax actions until the board restores public trust.  FOX 56
  • State Auditor Allison Ball updated her investigation into the medical cannabis lottery after small business owners said that large out-of-state companies used multiple applications to gain a competitive edge—one company filed 350 applications and received all three license types. Her office will review the rules for fairness in the lottery process—while Gov. Beshear’s office criticized her public comments about the ongoing audit.  WKYT
  • The Kentucky Department of Revenue announced several tax deadlines this month, including June 10 for Withholding Bimonthly and June 15 for Withholding Monthly, with later dates on June 20 and June 25 for other taxes. Taxpayers must log in to MyTaxes—Kentucky’s business taxpayer portal—to file returns, make payments, and submit refund applications.  Kentucky Today
  • Attorney General Russell Coleman said Wednesday that the Fayette County Public Schools Board violated state law by failing to publish the required notice before its May 27 meeting to propose a tax hike and voiding the vote, and State Sen. Amanda Mays Bledsoe urged officials to delay any further tax actions until proper procedures are followed.  Kentucky Today
  • Rep. Ryan Dotson announced his candidacy Tuesday night in Winchester for the 6th congressional seat after incumbent Andy Barr left to run for Senate. The Frankfort representative said his state work would help him in Washington — more candidates from both parties are expected to join the race soon.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FSIS is issuing a nationwide alert on 1-lb vacuum-packed ORGANIC RANCHER ORGANIC GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN 15% FAT produced May 22nd and May 23rd that may contain E. coli — the product was shipped to stores including Whole Foods in Kentucky and other states, and consumers should discard or return it. No illnesses have been reported, and buyers are advised to cook ground beef to 160°F to kill harmful bacteria.  Kentucky Today
