Volunteer fire departments in central Kentucky are struggling to recruit enough firefighters and secure funds needed to replace gear costing up to $5,000 per person.
Many rely on local grants + community donations and support from neighboring stations.
Officials announced that Fort Boonesborough campground will reopen in 2027 and Nolin Lake campground next year after flood damage forced extensive upgrades (improved drainage, electrical service, renovated bathhouses) to meet guest safety standards.

Wildwood Bookery is a new business at 400 Ann St. that combines romance and fantasy books with tattoo services.
The store operates Thursday through Saturday from 4-8 p.m. and will announce an author signing in July to boost local connections.

On Saturday, the Heritage Lecture Series at the Paul Sawyier Public Library featured Peter S.
Canellos discussing John Marshall Harlan's legacy. The series continues on Saturday, June 20 at 1 p.m. when Dr. Charlene J. Fletcher will explain how Black women reshaped roles at the penitentiary.
🎓 Education
KCTCS set a record by graduating over 25,000 students in the 2025-26 academic year; more than 10,000 earned associate degrees and nearly 3,000 extra credentials were awarded from its 16 colleges across Kentucky (a historic milestone for the institution).

Area farmers facing drought conditions can apply today for aid through the Farm Service Agency’s Livestock Forage Disaster Program.

Franklin County Commonwealth Attorney Larry Cleveland received the Legacy Award (2026 Law Alumni Association Hall of Fame and Alumni Awards) from UK Rosenberg College of Law on Monday, June 15.
He was honored for over four decades of service and leadership in the local justice system.
Governor Beshear signed an order Monday that posthumously pardoned 43 Kentuckians for helping enslaved individuals reach freedom.
He also declared Friday as Juneteenth National Freedom Day and invited locals to email further pardon recommendations (details are in the state press release).
