ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kentucky Proud will show products from local farms at the Great American Farmers Market next month at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said the event will bring attention to Kentucky farm families. The weeklong market—set to run from Aug. 3 to Aug. 8—will have over 50 vendors from 28 states.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Beshear on Thursday honored four good Samaritans (Jimmy Alexander, Jessica Alexander, Taylor Hall, and Adam Arnold) who saved Kentucky State Police Trooper Jude Remilien’s life after he was shot during a traffic stop at the Bluegrass Airport on July 13. They applied a tourniquet and used his radio to call for help, an act that preserved his life.  LEX 18
  • Today the Kentucky court system warned that scams are rising statewide and urged residents to hang up on calls demanding money for missed jury duty, warrants, or summonses. Court security manager Darren Allen said (each county has one circuit clerk for verification) that scammers are targeting people of all ages (including young adults and even police officers) and advised caution.  LEX 18
  • The new budget bill passed by Congress could cost Kentucky $250M yearly—cutting food aid for over 600,000 residents and risking child well-being. State officials and lawmakers will meet on Aug. 20 to examine changes to the SNAP program—seeking ways to protect food benefits.  LINK nky
  • Federal disaster aid has been approved to help parts of Kentucky recover from severe storms and flooding that damaged homes and left thousands without power—funding emergency work, repairs, and temporary housing. Governors requested the aid after recent severe weather swept through the area.  FOX 56
