  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass is short on male mentors as Kentucky children return to class. The organization said 48 boys and 28 girls are on the waiting list and it invites men to volunteer soon.  LEX 18

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear announced on Thursday that his administration launched the StopScams.ky.gov website and educational events to help Kentuckians avoid scams that cost them over $74 million each year. The site explains how to spot scams, report fraud, and recover losses (Public Protection Cabinet officials led the effort).  Kentucky Today
  • Governor Andy Beshear sat down with LEX 18's Larry Smith to share his vision for the state and praise FEMA’s work during recent severe weather while outlining plans to boost affordable housing using a trust fund that leverages private investment. He warned that a proposed federal health care bill could cut Medicaid and close hospitals — a change that may harm jobs and local health coverage.  LEX 18
  • Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded $150M in asphalt contracts that received only one bid in the first half of this year—KYFREE estimated that single bids inflated costs by over $12M compared to competitive offers.   • Legislators in Frankfort heard testimony on how prescribed fires cut wildfire risk, help rural farms, and keep our forests healthy. Experts explained that controlled burns remove dangerous fuels—raising points about insurance, safety rules, and training programs.  Kentucky Today
