Kentucky drivers face high gas prices in mid-August as Lexington averages $3.78 and the national figure tops $4 (compared to $3.15 last year).
AAA advises routine car maintenance and forecasters predict lower oil demand may ease prices near Labor Day.
🎓 Education
The Frankfort Independent Schools Board reviewed tax rate options for the 2026-2027 year at Monday's meeting & will propose a rate on Aug.
24. A 4% rate of 107.3 cents would add $44 annually on a $100,000 home compared with a compensating rate of 103.2 cents.
The Franklin County Board of Education proposed lowering the property tax rate for the 2025-2026 school year to 72.1 cents (down 2.1 cents from the current rate) to raise about $39.1 million.
The board will vote on the measure later this month while the next rate is due on Sept. 18.
🏛️ Government
Work under Capital Avenue Bridge continues on the Rebecca Ruth and Blanton's Landing sides and is expected to finish by November; crews may use nighttime hours to complete temporary sidewalk lanes, and early driver issues were addressed with improved markings.
Starting Sunday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will close alternating lanes on I-64 east and west from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between mile markers 53-58 and on U.S.-60 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday, Aug.
21, to complete bridge repairs and pavement improvements in Franklin County.
🏥 Health
On Thursday, the Kentucky Department for Public Health reported 502 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases and 819 reported cases across the state, up from earlier numbers; 33 people were hospitalized while 317 cases remain under investigation.
Governor Beshear urged Frankfort residents to donate blood today as hospital transfusions rise 40% amid a national supply crisis, with services available at the local Kentucky Blood Center at 363 Versailles Road, Suite 300 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
