CRIME NEWS

  • Aaron Gonzales, 42, is wanted for failing to comply with his Sex Offender Registration—Bluegrass Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for any anonymous tips.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Auditor Allison Ball testified before the Interim Joint Committee on Education that a 556-page report covering July 1, 2020 through June 30 found that the Kentucky Department of Education lacks measurable benchmarks and has outdated grant paperwork—though it did not show major spending problems.  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forester Cliff Drouet works for the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining as part of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative to replant trees on abandoned coal mine lands that look like barren moonscapes. So far, the program has planted 350 million trees—groups plan to plant on half a million more acres to help clean the water and air.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kentucky State Capitol closed beginning Wednesday as construction on the $291.5 million Capitol Renovation Project started—funded by the General Assembly to modernize infrastructure and repair deferred maintenance. The Capitol Education Center is being renovated with plans to reopen by mid-September, and parts of the Capitol Grounds including the Floral Clock and Gold Star Families Monument remain open.  LEX 18
  • Governor Andy Beshear announced $1.8 million in state funding through the Bluegrass State Skills Corporation to train nearly 2,300 Kentuckians as part of a workforce development effort—companies like James Marine, Lyons Magnus East and CertainTeed Gypsum will benefit from the program.  WTVQ
