Good morning, Frankfort. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 27th of August.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky State Police said they are accepting applications for Cadet Class 107, which will begin in May — the class offers a career in law enforcement with a starting salary of $69,500 and includes a 24-week training program for those without prior experience. Applicants must submit their applications online by Dec. 5 while experienced officers may join through the 13-week LEAP program.  Kentucky Today
  • Lawmakers discussed a proposed amendment to automatically restore voting rights to most convicted felons after they complete their sentences—Sen. Higdon and Sen. Herron said the bill, set for the 2026 session and a November vote, will exclude those convicted of treason, bribery in an election, sex offenses, violent crimes, and crimes against children. The measure comes after an executive order by Gov. Beshear and follows a similar proposal during the 2020 session.  Kentucky Today
  • State leaders said about 710,000 people in Kentucky are facing hunger — roughly one in six Kentuckians — and Governor Beshear has declared Hunger Action Month to address the issue. Local officials and school nutrition experts will call on volunteers and donations starting in September to help feed children and their families.  WKYT
