Good morning, Frankfort. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 29th of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Over 1,000 workers at BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale voted in a two-day election where 526 voted to join the UAW and 515 voted against, with 41 ballots challenged. BlueOval SK said it will ask the National Labor Relations Board to count all votes—if the challenged ballots do not change the result, workers will form their own union group.  Louisville Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kentucky's largest utility companies have proposed spending nearly $3 billion to build two new 645 megawatt gas plants and extend two coal plants—claiming a new tariff will shield customers from extra costs if future data centers draw more power. Regulators will review the plan by Oct. 28 while environmental and consumer advocates caution that delays or fewer data centers could burden ratepayers with higher bills.  Louisville Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KCTCS reported over 70,000 students enrolled this fall with a 6.4% increase from last year & officials expect enrollment to surpass 85,000 as new start dates take effect. The boost in numbers is set to strengthen the local workforce in fields such as healthcare and IT.  WTVQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky is facing worsening drought conditions as the latest report shows that 75.81 percent of the state is abnormally dry and 11.18 percent is in moderate drought—mainly in South Central, Southwest and a small area in the Northeast. The National Weather Service forecast says below normal temperatures and a 33-40 percent chance of rain from September 2-6 may bring some relief.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Members of the state Medicaid Oversight and Advisory Board questioned kynect administrators on Wednesday as they probed whether the state incurred any costs for the state-run health insurance exchange — officials explained that it is funded solely by a percentage of insurance premiums.
