ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A reader asked about the Lights Out signs seen on Wilkinson Boulevard as part of an annual campaign led by the National Audubon Society that asks residents and building owners to dim non-essential lighting from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during fall migration—helping to reduce bird collisions and save energy.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky’s archery deer season opens Saturday and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources urges hunters to review rules for deer health issues—like Chronic Wasting Disease and Hemorrhagic Disease. Officials noted new CWD cases at a Breckinridge County facility last October and confirmed that hunting rules stay the same while monitoring continues.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear updated the public on key state projects—Vsimple Inc. is moving its headquarters with a $5.1 million investment that will create 194 jobs, electric vehicle battery production began in Glendale, and nearly 2,300 Kentuckians received job training. He also said that work on the Mountain Parkway Expansion and $7.5 million in railroad grants is moving ahead, he signed an Overdose Awareness Day proclamation for Aug 31, and over $2 million in Violence Against Women Act funding is now available following a school safety report released after yesterday’s Minneapolis shooting.  92.7 The Wave

SPORTS NEWS

  • Franklin County’s boys soccer team beat East Jessamine 7—0 at FCHS on Thursday to tie its record at 2—2, with Josafat Flores Martinez and Talan Gillion scoring two goals each while Toluwani Sanbe, Alan Calderon and Elvin Rapalo also scored; the team will play its next match at home on Tuesday against Great Crossing.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort High’s girls soccer team evened its record at 3-3 with an 8-0 win over Owen County at Capitol View Park last Thursday—Emma Johnson and Autumn Wardlow each scored two goals while four other players also scored. The Lady Panthers will play Fern Creek at Capitol View Park Thursday.  The State Journal
