COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Frankfort Interfaith Council will host its annual Community Picnic at 4 p.m. Sunday at Upper Cove Spring Archery Park pavilion on Cedar Cove Road — Amy Snow will be honored with the Ruby Layson Award for her work with at-risk youth.  The State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gov. Andy Beshear said small businesses should apply for the Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit, which may give up to $25,000 if they add a full-time worker and invest at least $5,000 in new equipment or technology, as complete applications received by Nov. 1 will be reviewed for this year’s tax credits—businesses applying later may have to wait until next year.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dry conditions across Kentucky have led 32 counties and four cities to issue burn bans that limit outdoor fires and similar activities. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says local law enforcement will enforce the bans—violators may face misdemeanor charges.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After more than four months recovering from historic flooding, the Franklin County Courthouse reopened Tuesday for court sessions in a building that suffered millions in damage—Circuit Court Clerk Kem Marshall said that some offices remain closed with services now on the second floor.  LEX 18
  • Today, Frankfort begins construction on a new fire station on 2nd Street—this long planned project will replace an overcrowded facility and include classroom space for training EMTs, firefighters and paramedics while its site, once used for flood relief, now helps protect vital government buildings.  WKYT
  • State Sen. Jimmy Higdon said Tuesday he will not seek re-election in the 14th Senate District and will retire at the end of his current term on Dec. 31—marking over 20 years of public service. He said his decision is a chance to pass the torch to new leadership in Kentucky.  Kentucky Today
  • Sen. Donald Douglas plans to introduce a bill in the next legislative session to let researchers study ibogaine for addiction treatment—hoping to reclassify the drug and build public—private research partnerships. He said the bill comes as the state seeks better ways to help those with addiction and lower treatment costs.  Kentucky Today

  • Frankfort High senior Carter Denton was named Traditional Bank Athlete of the Week after winning the Pikeville Invitational by shooting 68 and being the medalist in all five conference matches his team has played this season—he will compete with teammate Josh Tandy in the All A state tournament on Saturday.  The State Journal
