COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept 5, the Frankfort unit of Church Women United celebrated its 70th anniversary at First Christian Church—Mayor Layne Wilkerson proclaimed the day as Church Women United 70th Birthday Celebration and local advocates marked Human Rights Day with awards to Amy Snow and Connie Lemley.  The State Journal
  • Capital City Activity Center and Meals on Wheels Greater Frankfort will host a series of recreational and health events from Sept 15 to Sept 19—featuring billiards, Bingocize with Carla, tai chi for arthritis, board games, knitting, drumming and bluegrass sessions. The schedule also includes classes like Matter of Balance, chair yoga and caregiver support to give local residents a variety of social and wellness options.  The State Journal
  • Marvellous Okonne, who got a life-changing Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift as a child, visits Frankfort today at The Point Community Church — 1142 Holmes St to share his story and remind locals to pack their gift-filled boxes during National Collection Week from Nov. 17-24.  The State Journal
  • Focus on Race Relations is offering mini-grants and scholarships up to $500 to anyone who wants to work on projects that boost race awareness in Frankfort and Franklin County—applications are open until Oct.15.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankfort's recovery from the Depression halted in January 1937 when the Great Flood—recorded at 47 feet—submerged half the city and forced over 2,000 residents into temporary shelters as services stopped working. The African American Historic Context Report shows that key Black neighborhoods in South Frankfort and Craw were hard hit, marking a turning point in the city’s growth.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kentucky's Supreme Court heard arguments on Thursday that a 2022 charter school law fits into the state's common school system and does not need a constitutional change—critics say it directs public funds away from elected school boards without voter input. The decision will affect how charter schools can open and operate under strict rules.  LINK nky
  • On Thursday the Kentucky Supreme Court heard arguments in Danville on HouseBill9, a measure that would use taxpayer dollars to fund charter schools. Gov Beshear urged more state funding for public schools while AG Coleman backed giving parents more school choice—justices have not yet said when they will rule.  Kentucky Today
  • First-grader Easton Satterwhite has been named WesBanco Student of the Week at Westridge Elementary for his kindness—his teacher noted that he helped a new classmate learn the rules and brighten the classroom with his smile.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Budget Director John Hicks said that General Fund receipts went up by 7.7 percent in August to $1,107.7 million from $1,028.2 million last August—recovering from a 12.7 percent drop in July. He added that strong wage growth boosted tax collections and a meeting next week will update revenue forecasts for future fiscal years.  Kentucky Today
  • At Wednesday's fiscal court meeting, planning director Autumn Goderwes reviewed plans for an industrial complex on U.S. 127 South designed to look like a park—featuring architect-designed buildings and improved lighting to limit the site's footprint while protecting economic and environmental values.  The State Journal
  • The Council on Postsecondary Education board approved a postsecondary biennial budget request that will boost state funding for public universities and KCTCS for fiscal years 2026-27 and 2027-28. The request calls for higher General Fund appropriations, funds to offset rising costs, and extra money for campus renovations—along with revisions to academic program policies and a new agreement with Morehead State University to help recruit students.  Kentucky Today

  • The Parkinson’s Support Group will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at First Christian Church using the Broadway Street entrance—snacks and sharing will start at 6 p.m. and guest speaker Sherry Sebastian will present on the health benefits of Drums Alive at 6:30 p.m.  The State Journal
