COMMUNITY NEWS

  • U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Henry G. Gish, a Vietnam veteran whose remains were unclaimed for over 50 years, will be laid to rest with military honors in Berea on Thursday — troopers will escort his remains from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport after DNA analysis confirmed his identity.  Kentucky Today
  • The Frankfort Rotary Club food drive is scheduled for Saturday at Kroger stores where volunteers will collect non-perishable food and monetary donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—all contributions will go to the Emergency Community Food Pantry to help provide meals for families in need.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Kentucky Student Success Collaborative—a CPE initiative—awarded five $60,000 planning grants to public colleges and universities to help support undergraduate students who are parents. Each school will spend nine months on a review, partnership building, and strategic planning effort to improve outcomes for these students.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Beshear addressed political leaders in Lexington on Monday—urging them to condemn all political violence without bias—and warned that selective outrage could fuel further conflict.  LEX 18
  • Franklin Circuit Court Judge Thomas Wingate dismissed State Auditor Allison Ball’s suit against CHFS over the review of kinship and foster care under Senate Bill 151—CHFS had complied with every request from the auditor’s office. Governor Andy Beshear noted that his administration supports the policy but said the General Assembly has not provided the necessary funding, and he plans to include the funds in his next budget proposal.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frankfort's boys soccer team evened its district mark at 1-1 with a 5-3 win at Western Hills on Saturday night—Stephane Bebe scored three goals while Grant Shelton and Cal Wainscott each added one.  The State Journal
  • State Journal reporter Linda Younkin was inducted into the Franklin County Football Hall of Fame at Benny Watkins Field Friday night along with FCHS assistant coach Dennis Ledford and Nick Sheridan.  The State Journal
  • Frankfort’s Jamie Bessinger led local varsity runners at the Capitol View Classic cross country meet, finishing second in the girls’ race in 22 minutes, 35.21 seconds—her strong showing marked a solid performance for local competitors.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County’s girls golf team wrapped up a busy week by finishing ninth at the All-State Invitational at University Club of Kentucky on Sunday—where Emerson Bowling placed third—and by winning the Kentucky 2A State Championship on Monday with Mary Clayton Rodgers as medalist and Bowling finishing second.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County football beat Lexington Christian 28-27 on Friday at Benny Watkins Field—senior Jacob Olds blocked the extra point to secure the win as the undefeated Flyers improved to 4-0. They will prepare for their district matchup at Shelby County on Friday.  The State Journal
