GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Andy Beshear condemned political violence after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and urged national leaders to denounce the act—he stressed that turning tragedy into partisan politics undermines our shared humanity.  WTVQ
  • The fire department advised local farmers to be careful when using farming machinery in dry conditions—dry weather can make sparks more dangerous. Officials urged extra precautions to help prevent accidental fires.  WKYT
  • Twenty-two Franklin County property owners have been approved for the NRCS Emergency Watershed Protection Recovery Buyout program after the near-record April flood—county and FEMA will buy and demolish the homes so nothing can be rebuilt on the sites. County Judge-Executive Michael Mueller said 14 additional properties have been identified for a second round as the application period closed in July.  The State Journal
  • The Kentucky State Police are joining nationwide agencies in Operation Clear Track during See Tracks? Think Train Week to cut vehicle-train crashes by urging locals to obey signals and use designated crossings — a program led by Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver. The initiative follows 41 collisions in Kentucky in 2024 that resulted in injuries and deaths and offers key rail safety tips.  Kentucky Today
  • Lieutenant Logan Curry announced his candidacy for Franklin County sheriff and vowed to improve safety by hiring more deputies and restoring the narcotics unit to fight heroin, meth and crack cocaine—he is a lifelong Frankfort resident with deep local roots. His filing deadline is January 9 while primary elections will be held in mid-May.  The State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Public Health officials reported six human cases of West Nile virus through Sept. 16 in Kentucky—each case coming from a different county while six other counties reported animal infections. Officials urged residents to use insect repellent and wear long clothing to avoid mosquito bites as the season continues.  Kentucky Today
  • Central Kentucky hospitals reported 67 nonfatal overdose visits since September 11 and officials urged residents to keep naloxone (an opioid reversal drug) available to help prevent fatalities.  LEX 18
  • Kratom is a plant-based substance sold in gas stations and tobacco shops that is sparking debate among addiction specialists in Kentucky. Christopher Cox, director of Changed Lives Counseling Center, said the substance mimics opioids by hitting brain receptors and lacks FDA approval — experts warn it may lead to harmful side effects and dependency.  LEX 18

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lexington Legends are holding a retirement event today for J.T. Riddle, who joined the team in early June and has served as both player and coach this season—he will play four innings and sign autographs after leaving the game. Riddle, a Western Hills graduate and former MLB player, is now the head coach at Franklin County High School—he was once named Kentucky’s Mr. Baseball in 2010.  The State Journal
